Back home to Madras.

April 2005

DELHI ----> MADRAS : with 60's supermaamis (super-aunties) from SRIRANGAM!!

i took a jet airways flight from delhi on return to madras..dunno this whole trip had been retro for me..this was no diff..the 2 seats on either side was 2 Tambhram maamis ..all friends and i was smack in the middle..i thgt its gnna be my longest trip back home(esp. considering einstines theory of relativity "old - is long")...but as i was chking my life jacket down(underneath the seat) and jus inspecting my seat,i cld see all the maamis in thier brand new addidas shoes..thier watch a hi-fi pierre cardin ladieswatch..was like a batch of 60's fashion skool alumini reunion :)!!

after the aircraft took off and set for cruise, the first maam told the second lady " u know this feels like i;m going from boston to new york" (dont remeber the exact places they said)...and the second lady says " yea, how abt our next trip to pittsburg"..[ALL IN TYPICAL TAMBHRAM style]..and i was thrown aback that i felt like a krishna amidst Mrs.gopikas:P (NOT miss. gopikas)!!...

then they went deeper into american geography, the distances, hrs of travel between each city and big time casual talks..i felt tiny amng that kitty party there!! as soon as they said "SRIRANGAM"..i laughed and told them one side of my family is there and have visited the temple there few times....and they were all delgihted...then they started telling me abt the temples in pittsburgh..." uknow ajay, its so beautiful, clean and i love it....after the temple we have a nice walk, have icecreames, candies and then go home....u must defently comethere, there r lot of ppl from srirangam there:P"....finding out their casuallness and progressive talks..immedialty touched thier weakness..told them" u must defnelty find a gurl from srirangam or its equivalent - california ":P!!"thats it ..from 40000ft they flew offto 80000ft as soon as i started abt theier most lovable topics, arranging marriages and sprituality...they were al sides happy and suddenly the youth in them bursted..the joy of a infant/child and of a elderly is unmatched in its natural, genuine, innocent charm!!.." they said sure sure, whynot,i will see like i see for my sons"!!

as soon as i saw this casuality and easinees i took it to the nextstep..ofcourse with slight nervousness, but cldnt shut my mouth either ..told them (in my slight srirangam accent - tamil)"MAAMI, YOU ALL LOOK CHEERFUL AND BEAUTIFUL IN THIS AGE, JUS WONDERING HOW YOU ALL WOULDHAVE BEEN 30-40 YRS BACK AND HOW YOUR DAUGHTERS WOULDBE NOW!!!" thats it..one big laughter and blushing everywhere..and immdeiatly one respondded " but mydaughters is married and happy with 2 kids in losangles...!!"..immediatly i said " oh really, thatsgr8, never knew u are a paati(granny) now:P"!!...and eventually reached madras...what seemd like a long trip was all made short my " superMAAMIS and THIER AMERICAN ADVENTURES".....

Delhi-Vaishno devi-Delhi

G'day mates, 2/3rd of the trip in delhi is done..the last phase but the painful one as the days r getting hotter, drier and no flying...studies after many years makes me feel old...ah well only thing progressing is my beared...jus one of the days took a break from the books to get out and chk the net after a while...going thru some old mails to look back and ironically found this one...when i returned from australia.

setting:
arnd the same motnhs, march - april 2005
same place - Delhi
Similar exams - DGCA aviation.

Date of the mail - 25/o4/2005
G'day, this is the second half of my trip from delhi backhome after the rishikesh one. By the time i had reached delhi i was dead tired and dint have tix booked for jammu ,The bus was always avaliable but with my sore body and considering its 16hrs by bus, i wld have no hope of coming back in onefull piece, but at thew same time i wanted to make it to Vaishno devi temple coming this far. Hence as s0on as i reached delhi morning 3a.m ..took a power nap for 2 hrs and then rushed to anearby train booking centre for tatkal. To my suprise the queue was long and mostly ladies taking advantageof thier so called "sexual minority listings", But in reality i cld see more than half of the ladies were stronger than me and i wldnt last more then 5 mins on a one on one dual with them. as i went for my tix tothe counter i cld see something southish abt ticket attendant:P..and found out he was from andhra...spoke the few words i knew in telegu.....he was delighted to see his statesmen and said he wld get me tix in a train..jus need to hold on for few mins till he finsihes off 2-3 other customers..i waited and he succesfully got me a tix that afternoon...so immediately took off to the station and left for jammu. My coupe in the train had 6ladies (in thier 50's) missing thier children whowere elsewhere. not that i cld understand full of thier hindi, but told them i'm a return from Australia after long time and going for pilgrimage. This was to save myself from explaining a long story of my hindi handicap and how am trying my best picking up the language fast(and i was!!)....then slowly i started speaking to them abt changing socity , generation gap, etc..jus to kill time and to involve them in the conversation....and then two of the ladies challenged me for a game of sudoku, was a absolute cracker as the ladies took sides, 3 with her and 2 with me.:)..I was lost halfway, i stopped thinking, jus admiring the hearty laughter and energy the ladies showed..., hence my team lost and it was worth the loss, jus observing them:)!!! i got all the ladies dinner from a transit station and they became delighted with tears.... Finally had to part ways with my 4 lovely backpacking girlfriends..
i reached jammu the next morning.. from jammu to katra is abt 2 hours of hill driving andi get nausea usually...but to my luck i got hol dof angovt bus which i freaked when i saw it..its anabsolute beauty that bus..no one knows where theengine is or how its running..but it runs..it coastedat 30kmph and was a very slwo journey that made mefeel comfy...the guy siting next to me was from army and he was speaking to me in hindi for 30 mins and i tried my best with my broken hindi (using more ofmatlap, hanji, phir, aur...)..but by my native habit i uttered " aamaa saar"...that guy freaked out and told " r u tamil"...and i said yes..he said " i thgt u were a pseudo telegu(US return working in microsoft-u) " so dint know whether to speak telugu or hindi and chose hindi..for which i told him " i dont know either of the language"!!..then i went and sat in the front near the driver who was a sardar..sang him some dance punjabi songs i knew (thanks to my 2 yrs experience of kitchen hand in a punjabi restaurant) ..ofcourse it dint sound like a typical punjabi song..it was lacking the nose twisting accent..but he was laughing when i told i was from madras and singing punjabi and we both sang some famous numbers together.....finally got down in katra and proceeded in pursuit for my stay..
My ACCOMODATION CRISES, A quick Stunt -
thgt it wld be easy to get a room..but all booked outand had to wait 2 hrs to get any if avaliable as that was the check out time. then finally i thgt i will pull out my old stunt i pulled 8 yrs back in madras. wentto the reception and told confidently i was the nephewof Chief vigilance commishner of delhi and needed a room. First they looked at me twice , they cldnt ignore for if it was true thier, they wld be in serious trouble of ignoring.. at the same time they cldnt belive as i dint have any letter nor intimation to prove. So he then askd me queries and i got fed up and dialled my madras number and quetly told my mum in tamil what happend and asked her to speak, when they spoke , she said yea we r related.then immediatly an Ac room was alloted for me...took a warm shower and started to trek by 2p.m...looking at it , it seemd easy..but trust me it takes half ur life.climbing 15kms upto 6500ft abve sealevel...killed me..but all along the way there were some stunning views, valleys, birds, water flowing which made it soothing...to my luck the mandir was abt to close and was the last one to have the dharshan, a small white marble tunnel leads you to the three pindi's (lord vishnu in form of 3 ladies)...
then climbed down to the foothills, totally took me 7 hrs..and nextday dint know what to do as my train was in the night..so i climbed again rather than sitting in the station...this time climbed with all my 10 kilobackpack, but as i knew what to expect, made it easier and more indulging in nature....again got a quckdharshan...came back and took a bus to jammu and from there to delhi ( and this time no Mrs. Gopikas or ppl for conversaton)! jus a sober trip back:)

Madras ---> delhi--->Rishikesh - backpacking

Prelude:I came back from Australia (on Jan) after my pilot training. Within few days i had been informed that i need to rush to delhi to take up exams in order to convert my Aussi license to indian. the day i reached delhi (Feb end), my journey through cultural diversity had begun....
Exams in Delhi: (mar/apr 2006)
I had my exams in delhi on the 27th and 28th April for whcih i had been preparing for 25 days staying in delhi..was amixed feeling abt delhi though it still comes second to bombay for me. but cant complain considering i made some good pilot friends and though started my coaching 2 months late quickly made it to the top3 in the class.which actually made me overconfident that i dint study the last 2 days before the exam, but go out to the bazzars of delhi eating local food (loads of Mishti dohi and chaats). the exam as such started off gr8 with a victory dance we did for the tamil song " appadi podu"!1 the songbecame famous after v played it to some of the bombay and banglore boys..for which they named it the "tamil party song"!!killed the exams, but was very funny to see the indian way of copying in the exams by students after 5 yrs!! :)!!(last seen in my 12th exam, my indulgence with it had faded by 9th std...beyond dat, uderstood easier to study than actually use other means!! (and by then my intrest in aviation and worldly sunbjects started and intrest in basic subjects degraded:P!!
Delhi --> Rishikesh:was an absolute cracker!!it was an unplanned one..jus the morning after exams me and my mate i met in delhi planned it. took the delhi state transport bus which was a adventure by itself..truly holy bus, considering its as old as india and still runs!! esp. my friend is a banglorean return from US after 10 yrs and everytime a traffic passed us, no diff. than seeing an horror movie.both were freaking out with the driving style on the highways here..we got an beautiful accommodation on the banks of gangus near laxman jula bridge. very neat ashram and peaceful. The next day was a big one.morning 10a.m we started off the rafting trip and felt special to know that only me and my friend dint know swimming and were the only first timers amng the 12ppl in the raft.(though life Jacket and helmet is mandotary for all)!!we all took our postions and i was to sit in last.started paddling..still water was all good.. then expirenced the first rapid..felt good when raft jumped abt 10ft of the water...then again still water which outta instinct made me to dive into the ganges..first held the ropes of the raft..then let it go when i felt confident with the life jacket...the journey went on smooth with four of us paddling and the 2 gujju girls in front of me using the ores more of a dandiya stick rather than paddling...finally they gave me the turn to sit in the front of the raft and i was thrilled not knowing we were nearing the most forceful rapid of the trip..as we approached dint look all that rough until we were in it..not seconds before the whole raft took off 20ft abve water 85-90degrees vertical and capsized...i was thrown abt 25ft above and last i cld see was blue sky and a grl over me..as soon as the raft set back the Nepalese sherpa instrcutor picked up the 2 girls first..and 3 other guys..while me and another guy were stuck in middle of the rapid for 5 mins as we cld see the raft row away faster in the downstream...first i panicked for few secs before i calmed down and practiced my survival lessons..kept still and jus went along the down stream and finally held on to a rock that came my way..climbed up the rock..took my t-shirt off and shouted..more of a castaway types..finally got into another raft that came after us....had a gr8 lunch after that ..a buffet in the beaches of ganges..after which was a peaceful trip back to our ashram...got a lift from a guy i met in raft back to delhi in his car..my friend thgt it wldbe the best , free and AC car and we cld jus sleep..but he was defnelty wrong,,the driver we went with hasnt even driven long once..suffered from night blindness....withn first 20 mins into the ride..missed 3 dividers and to top it all we saw in our prezence 3 head on accidents..raised abt every hair in our body, cld see my life in front of me.. and what was a 4 hr trip back home..we made the driver to crusie at 40kmphand reach delhi in 9hrs!!1 the car trip was more dangerous than Formula 1 car racing.,..in F1 the life of the drive depends on him..here my life depends on the driver!!
.but finally came back to delhi...AND continued with my expedition of exploring as much local food, heritage sites and activities arnd delhi:)!!..
well as i always believe in unplanned things r far better than planning anything!!!
